Daniel Philip Weatherill reports:

This was an interesting race - first time the boat has done ANY sustained high rate work,

Like every race I've ever been in with a Clare crew, it had some scrappy bits, slightly made up for by quite a lot of power.

On the plus side, we were able to recover technique after it was lost at several points: the pushes all felt responsive, and the reset out of ditton corner made me feel like a Phil Collins song (this is a good thing.)

The push at the end was like a gorilla trying to undo the top of a child-proof medicine bottle: effective but hardly elegant.

We need to find a way of applying our full power with better technique boys! The power is definitely not bad, but it's ahead of where our rowing ability is at present.

Nicola Pocock reports:

Well, 4th college W1 is definately not too shabby!

Today was a nice race, with an awesome rhythm. I really cannot emphasise enough how good it felt! We perhaps could have rated a bit higher off the start, but ultimately we had a very clean row and the power never died once. Now we know we can row like that we just have to push it that bit harder next time and go for those extra few pips.

Within 10s of the fastest crew and only 1s off Emma, ahead of us. And that's having lost those few seconds having to overtake a crew coming out of grassy. I'm pretty pleased! :-)

For the first water race for these Clare Men, it was definitely a performance to be proud of! Bringing what they've learned so far together to deliver a calm, yet chunky row over the head course. A very respectable result and one which bodes well for Fairbairns!
